2010 MOIA CONFERENCE NEWS

MOIA Secretary-Treasurer Greg Bailey reports that after meeting with MOIA President David Bohdal, a decision was made to change the format of the MOIA Annual Conference from a week long event to a series of half to one day events held at various agencies in Michigan and Ontario. Bailey is calling upon MOIA members to help by identifying those members and agencies willing to provide time and resources for these half to full day seminars.

If you and your agency can help host a conference, or you have suggestions for presenters, please contact Bailey at ibisgbb (at) comcast.net Read Bailey's press release by clicking here (PDF format).

In a related development, MOIA members will be able to update their membership information via the MOIA web site starting December 1.

NAS FORENSIC REPORT NOW FREE

The National Academy of Science's "Strengthening Forensic Science in the United
States: A Path Forward" is now available for free by downloading from this link. The file is in Adobe PDF format and is large. Readers may want to right-click and save to their computer rather than reading it online.

ARKANSAS LAB PERSONNEL TESTIFY VIA VIDEO

FAYETTEVILLE – Ron Wood in NWA News reports that Arkansas State Crime Lab scientists are testifying in Washington County Circuit Court proceedings via video rather than in person, resulting in cost and labor savings for the lab. More on this story can be found here.

Many Michigan courts are already using video conferencing technology for district court arraignments. This natural outgrowth of court video may allow agencies to comply with the Melendez-Diaz decision without causing great financial strain.

ACADEMIC-FORENSIC PARTNERSHIPS CONTINUE

In what may be a win-win situation, another college-based forensic lab is about to open. KJRH news reports that the Tulsa Police Department-Oklahoma State University joint forensic lab will soon start operations. Read the KJRH story here.

California State University-Los Angeles had earlier entered into a similar arrangement with the Los Angeles Police and Sheriff's Departments to operate a joint forensics lab. The lab also provides training for forensic students at CSU-LA.
